Discussion of Snyder's early life in the Northwest on a small farm during the Depression years and his exposure to political activism and nature; his admission to Reed based largely upon his poetry; the political climate at Reed during the war years; life off-campus in Lambert House; other poets at Reed such as Lew Welch and Philip Whalen; interactions with faculty members Lloyd Reynolds, David French, Richard Jones, William Alderson, and Stanley Moore; his thesis on Native American myth; skiing and climbing with the Mazamas; the process of "de-education" and the eventual turning to Zen Buddhism after leaving Reed.
